Cinnamon and the (Imaginary) Ants

Yaayy for me! I learned something this week!! (Listening to applause...bowing......holding out both hands as I mouth "Thank you" repeatedly.......) I learned that if you spread cinnamon along the wall where ants are coming in, they won't return, because they don't like cinnamon. Who knew? Apparently, my husband's cousin, whose sister (also his cousin) saw imaginary ants at Easter. That's right. She is pointing at ants along the wall that don't exist, and her sweet sister spreads cinnamon along the wall. I later asked if the cinnamon trick is for real, or was she merely humoring her sister. She said her friend told her she did that when she and ants, and she figured that she could use it to accommodate her sister, and it wouldn't hurt the dog. For those of you who have young children, you might find this to be worth a try if you ever have an ant problem. Or a sister who sees imaginary ants. Or happen to like spreading seasoning and condiments along the wall (it makes as much sense as seeing imaginary ants, doesn't it?)

For a long time I had a chalk stick like thingy that I'd gotten at a dollar store. It claimed to get rid of ants, but most of the wording on it was some Asian language.

But it worked. I just drew a chalk line across any opening that I didn't want ants to cross.

It's probably good that I lost it before I had kids. No telling what kind of toxins it contained.

(I'm kidding - I think.)

I think it was just boric acid (i.e. borax), which does a very good job of repelling ants and I'm pretty sure doesn't kill humans or dogs.

Cinnamon does sound more aromatic and festive tho. Especially for those pesky Christmas ants.

Ummm ok!

Well, I love me some cinnamon on everything so if I put it on the wall, I hope I don't start licking the walls?

Yeah, strange I know!

Imaginary ants? That's just crazy! Now imaginary rollie-pollies, that's another matter...

I have heard about the cinnamon thing, but just recently. If I put it all around the outside of my house though, will people think I live in a gingerbread house? Will I need to worry about Hansel and Gretel eating my house?

We had ants last spring and I'm not a fan of pesticides so I tried the chalk line first. Worked for a bit till the smart ants chose another entrance. I went to the cinnamon and the same thing happened. It worked temporarily.
We eventually had to call the Bug Lady. They left.

Imaginary ants may be much harder to get rid of. That might be one for DEAR GABBY.

CHALK? What do you do? Draw tiny little ant body outlines? That would be awesome. Never heard of cinnamon. We have fire ants. The only home remedy that seems to work with them is gasoline or lighter fluid. But that's more of an outside thing...

You don't have any EPA readers do you, Helen?

I think I like Katdish's idea. Of course that won't work in the house...

It does work! We do it up here in Idaho all the time! (please say that with a drawl, not that we have them up here, but that's how that sounded)

I did not know that. That's good to know when it starts getting hot and dry out and the little punks start trying to come into my kitchen. And it will smell nice as I kill them...BONUS!

I'm with Kat about the fire ants. It takes highly toxic, flammable, illegal substances to kill those things. I was obsessed with ridding them from my yard when I was pregnant. Given the things I sprayed on the lawn to kill them, it's a wonder:

a. I didn't kill the lawn
b. My children weren't born with extra arms or 12 toes or something like that

I had an issue a few years ago with those gross waterbugs (that's a nice word for roaches, BTW). I tucked bay leaves underneath my baseboards...haven't seen another one since. They hate the smell)

Marni-

And whenever anyone walks into your kitchen, do they suddenly crave spaghetti?
